What documents should you ask a packaging supplier to provide?

Begin with a product list that uses exact item codes. For each item, record the supplier, factory, material layers, dimensions, intended food type, temperature range, contact time, print, adhesive, coating, production lot, and country where it will be sold. A generic catalogue is not traceability.

  1. Request a signed declaration. It should identify the exact finished packaging and the relevant EU requirements, not merely say “eco-friendly.”
  2. Request PFAS evidence. Ask which of the Article 5 thresholds were evaluated, which test methods and analytes were used, and whether total fluorine requires further explanation.
  3. Review general food-contact compliance. PFAS is one issue; migration, composition, good manufacturing practice, and material-specific measures still matter.
  4. Verify the current version. Match the report to the supplier, material, coating, print, factory, sample, and production lot or change-control system.
  5. Check environmental claims. Recyclable, reusable, and compostable claims need definitions, test standards where applicable, labeling, and a realistic end-of-life route.
